Cinderella - By K.Y. Craft - Traditional Literature

There once was a man who had a beautiful daughter named Cinderella. This man married his second wife who had two haughty daughters. Soon after marriage, the man died and Cinderella had to live with her new step mom and step sisters. Cinderella was assigned to do all house chores and was given a small room in the dirty attic. She was treated poorly by her evil sisters and step mom who lived like queens. One day, there was a huge ball that the whole town was going to be at, even the handsome prince. Cinderella was not allowed to go, but with the help from fairy godmother, she did. At the ball, Cinderella met the prince and they fall in love, but she has to hurry home before her sisters came back. Will the prince ever find Cinderella again?
I would use the Cinderella story when teaching my students about traditional literature. I would start my lesson by teaching the students what fairy tales are. I would have the students create a KWL chart for prior knowledge. Next, I would read the book to the students. While reading, I would have the students write down any elements in the story that make it a fairy tale. When the story is over, the students would share what they had written down. The discussion should include vocabulary such as; magic, fairy godmother, spells, evil, etc.   The whole class will discuss the differences between the good and evil characters and what happened to each in the story.
